Green Tea – Pregnancy

green-tea-pregnancy-pictureGreen Tea + Pregnancy: Do they go together?

Drinking green tea has a lot of health benefits, mostly due to the antioxidants in contains. The polyphenols help get rid of free radicals in your body, which is a very good thing.

However, green tea also has caffeine, and too much caffeine is considered a no-no for pregnant women. This is because caffeine passes through the placenta and into the developing baby’s bloodstream. The baby is unable to metabolize the caffeine in the same way an adult does.

What level of caffeine may be safe or unsafe for the developing baby is not known. Research has found, however, that consuming the amount of caffeine found in five or more cups of coffee per day doubles the risk of miscarriage.

A generic blend of brewed coffee has about 150mg of caffeine in a 6-ounce cup whereas a 6-ounce cup of brewed tea only has around 26mg.

That means that 5 cups of coffee would have about 750mg of caffeine, while the same amount of green tea would only have 130mg of caffeine. Obviously, that’s a big difference!

What does this mean with Green Tea - Pregnancy?

Considering this, moderate consumption of green tea shouldn't be a problem during pregnancy.  After delivery you still need to keep track of caffeine intake, however, if you plan to breast-feed your baby.  The caffeine will pass through the breast milk. Experts like Dr. Weil suggest limiting your consumption of caffeine to 300mg or less daily during this time.

You also need to keep in mind that green tea isn't the only thing you might be drinking with caffeine. Obviously, if you drink coffee, you need to check the caffeine amounts, but many soft drinks and even “health” drinks also contain caffeine. Be sure to check the labels and keep track of how much caffeine you are getting each day.

There are other factors to consider about drinking green tea when you are expecting. Check out our “Green Tea and Pregnancy” page for more information.

Green Tea And Health

Green Tea And Health Benefits From It

For almost five thousand years, green tea has been a beverage of choice in China. It is used as a medical beverage there to treat all kinds of ailments from headaches to depression..

The leaves come from an evergreen plant called Camellia sinesis, just like black tea does. However, they are treated differently in processing. When making green tea, the leaves are picked and then steamed. That way the antioxidant compounds are not altered chemically or oxidized.

In the Americas in recent years, green tea is becoming more and more popular because scientific research suggest it may actually have a lot of health benefits.

So What Does Green Tea Do For You?

Although green tea has many proven health benefits, not all health claims have been verified. For example, it supposedly helps burn calories, which is why people on a diet like to drink it. Additionally, green tea is purported to help Multiple Sclerosis and stop the onset of senile dementia. There is no scientific evidence to back up these particular claims at the moment, but neither have they been proven wrong.

As for what makes green tea so good for us, the health benefits come from the polyphenols the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant contain. There are various food products available that contain green tea such as desserts, ice cream, cooking pastes, rice cakes and syrups.

People who like the smell can even buy aromatherapy candles, air fresheners and potpourri that are made with green tea essential oil.
